Jill D’Agnenica

Jill D’Agnenica is a visual artist and filmmaker and mother to two daughters. Her directorial debut, the feature film Life Inside Out, won Best Premiere at the Heartland Film Festival in 2013 and went on to be screened at 21 festivals throughout the US and Canada, receiving 16 awards, including 5 Best Feature and 4 Audience Awards. After a limited theatrical run, Life Inside Out is now available on DVD and VOD. D’Agnenica has edited television episodic dramas including The Division (Lifetime), Dirt (FX), Undercovers (NBC), Hollywood Heights (Nickelodeon) and Switched at Birth (Freeform.) She is currently an editor on Pretty Little Liars (Freeform.) D’Agnenica recently directed her first episode of television on Switched at Birth. In addition to her television work, D’Agnenica works on music videos, indie shorts and features and enjoys opportunities to contribute as a guest lecturer, panelist, and mentor to fellow filmmakers and artists. She holds an MFA in Visual Art from Claremont Graduate University and a BA, Magna Cum Laude, in History from UCLA.

Bruce L. Smith

A former public school teacher, Bruce L. Smith has worked at Sudbury schools in four states over the past 19 years (currently, Clearview Sudbury School in Austin, Texas). In 2005 he created an organization now known as Friends of Sudbury Schooling to enhance awareness and support for this uniquely democratic model of self-directed learning, first developed by Sudbury Valley School in 1968. Tessa Jolls

Tessa Jolls is President and CEO of the Center for Media Literacy, a position she has held since 1999. She also founded the Consortium for Media Literacy, a nonprofit which provides research and a monthly newsletter publication.  During her tenure at CML, Jolls’ primary focus is working in partnership to demonstrate how media literacy works through school and community-based implementation programs. She actively contributes to the development of the media literacy field internationally through her speaking, writing and consulting, with curriculum development and research projects, and through publishing and disseminating new curricular and training materials.

In 2015, Jolls received the Global Media and Information Literacy Award, in recognition of her work in Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue, from the UNESCO-initiated Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL), in cooperation with the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC).   In 2014, Jolls was honored with the International Media Literacy Award by Gateway Media Literacy Partners; in 2013, she was  recognized with the Jesse McCanse Award for Individual Contribution to Media Literacy by the National Telemedia Council.

James Kashevos

As an alumni of one of Colorado’s Sudbury schools, Alpine Valley School, James Kashevos takes great pride in his ability to learn and adapt to challenges as they arise. Due to a passion for technology, he spent large amounts of his childhood tinkering with computers, eventually leading to work in the Information Technology Industry. Currently, James is working as an Information Security Engineer at Cypress Data Defense with a focus on performing security testing on web applications.

Miranda Ortiz was born in Mexico City and moved with her family to Canada at the age of 8. She graduated from McGill University with an honours degree in International Development Studies which she was able to help form as the area was only being opened at the time. Her work has touched local communities as varied as the Zapotecos from the hills of Oaxaca in Mexico, the Mohawks from Canada and various groups from northern Papua New Guinea.

Currently she resides in an off grid home in southeastern Mexico. Over the last 9 years she has been working to help women achieve natural births. The focus of her Enlightened Birth -Parto Iluminado program is to share information and deep relaxation techniques with families so as to empower them to take independent decisions for themselves and their families. Her own children were born at home and are being educated within the family circle.

As an outgrowth of this, she founded Centro Bek, a centre aimed at bringing tools and support to families and individuals so they too can create their own independent realities. Alternatives in birth, education, health, and living lightly on the earth, are all part of the integrated, consciously created, sustainable future which the centre promotes.
