For the Love of Learning Episode 88
Facilitating Alternative Higher Education
Monday December 26, 2016 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm EST
Tuesday December 27, 2016 1:00 am – 3:00 am BST
In this episode we are going to explore the options surrounding facilitating alternative higher education.
Despite advances in technology, most colleges and universities still operate using traditional educational models, that are outdated or archaic. Clearly universities as we once thought of are not for everyone. The cost incurred is not the only reason many are searching for alternative methods. Many who are undecided about about attending a traditional university are starting to weigh their options and considering other methods of learning such as apprenticeships, gap years, overseas study, and non – traditional higher education. Tonight’s panel will explore some of these options and more. Stay tuned for an amazing conversation.
Jonathan Dawson is a sustainability educator, currently working as Head of Economics at Schumacher College in Devon. Until recently a long-term resident at the Findhorn ecovillage and a former President of the Global Ecovillage Network, he has around 20 years experience as a researcher, author, consultant and project manager in the field of small enterprise development in Africa and South Asia. Jonathan is the principal author of the Gaia Education sustainable economy curriculum www.gaiaeducation.org, drawn from best practice within ecovillages worldwide, that has been endorsed by UNITAR and adopted by UNESCO as a valuable contribution to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. As a consultant for Worldschooling at TOUCHING LIFE, LEARNING FOR REAL, Mariette assists parents, children, teens and young adults to make the transition to a life of self-motivated learning and living. She supports and facilitates the process where each individual can become who they are and contribute his/her talents and gifts to the world, no matter what their age.
Her passion is inspiring people into living life as an Artist, each individual’s life a canvas of colors, lines, balance and intensities. She believes that we are born with the tools to learn and that the World is the ultimate classroom. Designing learning experiences to shift from mimicking life to experiencing life in its full grandeur is her strongest virtue. She calls it playing in the real world.
Mariette also mentors mentors who uplift and empower young people in South Africa. Bringing people to their value makes her come alive.
Traian is a Learning Architect, on a mission to create a new kind of university. He values freedom, courage, kindness and ice cream.
Traian co-founded The Alternative University – a small (150 students) freedom-centered university in Bucharest, Romania. A British friend had this to say about it: “A university RUN by students and ex students. Where there are no qualifications. People direct their own learning. Everyone’s a student and everyone’s a teacher. A place built from the love of learning. A place exuding hope that we — the people — can take control of our destiny.”
In 2015, before leaving Romania in August, Traian coordinated the joining of forces for starting Entrepreneurship Academy – a formal university focused on entrepreneurship.
After 12 years,Traian decided to take a break from (social) entrepreneurship. At the moment, he is traveling the world in search of inspiration, wisdom and and allies to get his work to the next level. Traian will write a book called Break Free From University
