Sarah has an extensive background in alternative education. She holds a Masters in Montessori Integrative Learning with a specialty in Garden-Based Education. She is a MACTE certified Montessori teacher, trained to teach ages 2.5 – 12. She also holds a degree in Outdoor Education and a BA in Sociology. Sarah’s real pride and joy is being the mother to three phenomenal children; Lucas, Hailey and Scarlet.
Sarah believes in honoring the individuality of children by nurturing their self-creation, independence, creativity and imagination. She does so by following the interests and learning styles of each child individually while allowing learning to naturally unfold. This way, children take their learning as far as their heart and minds desire- often much further than any teacher-imposed learning outcome would have enabled. Her desire is to connect children to the Earth while igniting passion and a life-long love of learning.
Sarah has been teaching in a varity of settings for 16 years. Prior to becoming a Montessori teacher, Sarah instructed for Outward Bound in South Africa where she lead adjudicated Zulu and Xhosa youth in the mountains for 21-day outdoor leadership excursions. She has worked with ages 2.5-12 in different Montessori schools throughout Hawaii, California and British Columbia, Canada. In addition to teaching in the classroom, Sarah owned and operated her own Montessori preschool which operated at capacity with a waitlist. She also co-founded a homeschool program called Love of Learning on Bowen Island, British Columbia.
Originally from Canada, Sarah currently runs a nature and project-based homeschool program, Love of Learning Green, for families on Koh Samui, Thailand where she has been living with her family for 1.5 years. She has a group of permanent families and also part-time families who travel through Koh Samui and join the program while visiting. The idea for the Global classroom came from these visiting families asking how they could remain involved from afar. And so, Love of Learning Green GLOBAL was born.
Receiving her BA in Economics and French from the University of Michigan in 1966, Joy immediately began her professional career as a Municipal Bonds Investment Analyst at Detroit Bank & Trust. After 1 year, Joy and her “new husband” enthusiastically joined the Peace Corps. Upon their return, Joy was offered a position teaching 3rd/4th graders at PS #1 in Baltimore, MD. There she received hands on, Real Life training, stepping into her first “Inner City” classroom across the street from the city jail. Upon earning MA degrees from Morgan State University (Baltimore, MD) and Bethany Bible College (Santa Cruz, CA), Joy joined Santa Cruz City Schools as a teacher of math&English for struggling Middle & High School students.
After several years of successfully creating mathematical miracles with young people learning and liking math, Joy realized HER OWN PASSION~enticing people (ages 5-95) to the Love of Learning, helping them develop the skills to WORK & LIVE IN THEIR PASSION OF CHOICE!
Thus, in 1986, Joy and “Team Swan” launched the precursor of Swan Educational Center, supporting hands on, real-life learning by visiting businesses with 5-15 year old students. Questions were asked and apprenticeships acquired so that students (now ages 5-95) can get a sense of “what people in this world DO to earn their living”. As Swan Educational Center Global enters its 29th year, students from around the globe contact Joy and her staff for educational support. Plans are in process to create Global Regional Centers, engaging ALL AGES (5-95) in the “JOY OF LEARNING” everywhere on Planet Earth.
Statement of the Process and Success at Swan Educational Center, now Global
At Swan Educational Center Global, “we guide as educators with compassion, engaging all of our clients to proceed with passion”, creating opportunities for humans to embrace and acquire the skills needed to move joyfully through the world, living and working in their field of choice.
